New skills needed in post-pandemic economy
The Employment Minister expects training to be a priority as the country gears up for the resumption of economic activity after the COVID-19 lockdown.
Willie Jackson says while the government wage subsidies may have saved many jobs, areas like tourism won’t resume in a hurry.
He’s expecting a big increase in unemployment, and existing schemes aimed at young Māori unemployed will need to change.
"We will be looking at redeployment. We will be looking at training, training, training in terms of our young people. There needs to be a real emphasis there," he says.
Willie Jackson says he also wants to see iwi putting some of their resources into job creation.
