Cannons Creek has a new library, with Ngā Kete Mātauranga opening to the public today on Bedford Reserve beside the local pool.
Ngāti Toa kaumātua Dr Taku Parai blessed the library at dawn on Friday and gifted its name, meaning baskets of knowledge. The opening celebrations brought whānau together for storytelling, performances, play and kai.
The new space offers more room for reading, study and community activities than the former Warspite Avenue library. Its modular interior can also change as community needs grow.
Porirua history is built into the library. Reclaimed rimu and mataī from Gear Homestead feature alongside recycled materials, rainwater collection and energy efficient lighting. Designs reflecting Ngāti Toa and the local environment include tuna and ruru.
For generations of Cannons Creek tamariki and whānau, it is a new place to gather, learn and share stories.
