The Alliance Party is putting Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the centre of its constitutional agenda, arguing Aotearoa needs a political system that more clearly reflects the relationship between Māori and the Crown.
In its latest election policy announcement, the party is backing Te Tiriti-centred constitutional reform, presenting the proposal as part of a wider debate over how Māori rights, tino rangatiratanga and Crown responsibilities should be recognised within New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements.
The policy arrives as Te Tiriti has become a significant election issue, with Parliament considering three bills that would standardise, repeal or alter the strength of Treaty provisions across a range of legislation. The Justice Committee is currently seeking public submissions on those proposals
The Alliance, re-established for the 2026 election and describing itself as a democratic socialist party, has been campaigning on wider changes including public ownership, tax reform, universal public services, workers’ rights and housing.
Its latest announcement adds constitutional reform to that platform and places the party among those arguing that the future status of Te Tiriti should form part of a broader conversation about how Aotearoa is governed.
With Election 2026 approaching, Te Tiriti is increasingly becoming not only a debate about individual laws, but about the constitutional relationship between Māori, the Crown and the state itself.
