The Newcastle Knights are heading to their first NRL Grand Final since 2001 after stunning the Penrith Panthers 22-14, despite playing much of the match with 12 men following the send-off of Phoenix Crossland. Penrith also suffered a major blow when star halfback Nathan Cleary was taken to hospital with a broken leg.
The result comes just a week after Newcastle ended the Warriors’ season 12-10 at Eden Park, in a match overshadowed by a late refereeing decision the NRL subsequently acknowledged was incorrect.
Newcastle will now meet the Sydney Roosters in the NRL Grand Final on October 4, after the Roosters defeated the Dolphins 36-20 in their preliminary final.
