History curriculum pleasing parents
Principals Federation president Leanne Otene is urging the Government to stick with the new history curriculum.
An Education Review Office report on the rollout of the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories Curriculum found it is now in more than three quarters of skills, but not all of the content is being taught yet.
It says schools need to teach how histories are linked to global contexts, and to teach key skills such as critical thinkjing rather than just focus on the content.
Ms Otene says while some teachers feel overwhelmed as the history is as new to them as the students, parents are saying they wish they had been taught it when they were at school.
Leanne Otene says the report shows curriculum experts will be needed to ease the roll out.
