Environment plan path to destruction
Greenpeace has slammed the government for rolling out the welcome mat to globally destructive industrial practices – ignoring decades of overwhelming opposition from Māori, the public and even the courts.
The Government has invited 200 national and international organisations to submit projects that could fit the criteria of the new Fast Track Approval Bill.
Greenpeace’s Juressa Lee says one eager applicant is Trans-Tasman Resources – which has tried and failed for years to win approval for seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight..
She says mining companies around the world are keen to see the floodgates open.
“It’s indigenous peoples, and their traditional knowledge. Frontline communities and their lived experiences. And experts with the best available science – versus industry, looking to plunder the planet, for a buck.” Ms Lee says.
She says the world’s experts overwhelming agree that seabed mining will be destructive, and possibly cause irreversible damage – and yet our government thinks profits are more important.
