Leave whānau to grieve says Ikaroa-Rawhiti MP
Ikaroa-Rawhiti MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says whānau and friends of Chrysler Stevens-Mark and Kane Taare-Gray should be left to mourn in peace.
The cousins were killed in a brawl that erupted during Mr Stevens-Mark’s 21st birthday celebration in Gisborne at the weekend.
Ms Tangaere-Manuel says it’s now up to police to work out what happened.
“My heart goes out to the whanau who are grieving at this time. They gathered to celebrate the life of a loved one and now they are grieving. I think that’s the important message right now – to leave the whānau to grieve, not to jump to any assumptions, and just to acknowledge the mahi being done in Gisborne not only by police and other organisations but the ahi kaa o te ranga hapū katoa o Tūranganui-ā-Kiwa there to support the whānau and community,” she says.
One person has appeared in court in relation to the incident. Police investigations are contnuing.
