Potaka warns media funds limited
Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says Māori media is going to have to do more with limited funding.
Speaking to Whakaata Māori chief executive Shane Taurima during this week’s Hawaikirangi 2024 World Indigenous Content Conference, Mr Potaka said he’s still waiting for advice on the review of Maori media done by the previous Government.
He says the National-led coalition is looking for cost savings across the board, but it’s essential not to lose sight of the kaupapa.
“The role for government in my view is to help facilitate the increased usage and also the increased quality of te reo Maori and there are limited resources but that’s OK. When there are limited resources we’ve got to centre ourselves and gravitate around what’s working really well, support that, some things aren’t necessarily working well, OK, and then get the innovation Maori Television and others +like yourself have been responsible for undertaking in the last five to 10 years,” Minister Potaka says.
