Waka hourua bound for Chathams

Two of the traditional waka hourua involved in Friday’s Kupe performance to open the NZ Arts Festival are now getting ready to sail to Rekohu – Chatham Islands.
The voyage is to support a gathering convened by Hokotehi Moriori Trust to promote connections between voyaging cultures in the Pacific.
Moriori will be among the crew members for the first time, learning about way finding and ocean navigation.
On the journey Te Matau a Maui will carry out ocean transect surveys for microplastics which are having a devastating effect on seabirds and marine life.
Hokotehi Moriori Trust wants to form its own voyaging trust and build a waka for the Chathams.
