Kai security on Cure Kids agenda
Māori educator Linda Tuhiwai Smith says her new research journey is close to her heart and home.
She’s being funded by Cure Kids New Zealand to work on a kai sovereignty project in the eastern Bay of Plenty.
The distinguished professor at Whakatāne’s Te Wananga o Awanuiārangi says she will work with whanau of young babies and toddlers to see how they can use traditional knowledge.
“In the Eastern Bay you can still go fishing, you can go hunting, you can go gathering, there’s a big tradition here of gardening… So fresh food, food that’s within our reach, if we learn the skills,” Professor Smith says.
The main aim of the project is to sow the seeds for inter-generational change – and support kai sovereignty and good health for a new generation.
