Pukapuka offers pointed to Māori-led violence response
The compiler of a new book on family and sexual violence says Māori need to look for solutions within their own communities and history.
Litany of Sound Revisited is a literature review summarising case studies, academic archives and past public inquiries on Māori in Aotearoa.
It was commissioned by Te Pūkotahitanga – the tangata whenua ministerial advisory group which provides independent advice on the implementation of Te Aorerekura – the National Strategy to Eliminate Family Violence and Sexual Violence.
Professor Denise Wilson says she wants to enlighten people about the impacts of family violence not just on wahine Māori and their children but on tane.
“It provides insight about how we might need to change our thinking in terms of structuring solutions and it explores some of the current solutions but also where we need to go and what else we need to do. This is about promoting Māori-led and driven approaches that are relevant and make sense for our whanau Māori,” she says.
Professor Wilson says the response to the book from Maori women has been positive,
