Marae ready for fire, flood or flu
Two Tauihu marae are now better prepared if disaster strikes.
Ipu Ohotata or containers filled with equipment for use in an emergency have been placed at Waikawa Marae near Picton and Hauhunga Marae near Blenheim.
Lorraine Eade from Te Kōtahi o Te Tauihu Charitable Trust, which brings together the eight Te Tauihu iwi, says Māori wardens and other community members started training in emergency management response two years ago, and marae have also developed their own plans.
Te Kōtahi has also partnered with Nelson Tasman Emergency Management to ensure its strategy aligns across the rohe.
