Chloe Swarbrick lays down wero as new Greens’ co-leader
New Green Party co-leader Chloe Swarbrick has thrown up a challenge to Labour, declaring the party the leading voice of the left.
Party delegates have overwhelmingly chosen the Auckland Central MP to replace outgoing co-leader James Shaw, with non-parliamentary challenger Alex Foulkes receiving zero votes.
Mr Shaw, who intends to remain in parliament until a members’ bill in his name is dealt with.
Ms Swarbrick says she wants to strengthen the party.
“I believe we are the leading voice on the left and I believe our numbers on parliament reflect that. Fundamentally my job for the next few weeks and months and years is to identify local champions across this country to run serious and inspiring campaigns in their communities to realise their power to change this country for the better,” she says.
Green Party tīkanga means one co-leader is tangatawhenua and the other is tangatatiriti.
