First polytechnics merge into Te Pūkenga

Bay of Plenty-based polytechnic Toi Ohomai and Waikato-based Wintec will formally become part of the new national tertiary education provider Te Pūkenga at the end of May.
Vaughan Payne, Te Pūkenga’s deputy chief executive for operations, says it’s a major step for vocational training.
The organisation hopes to incorporate all 16 polytechnics and nine industry training organisations by the end of the year.
He says the new model should better serve learners, employers and iwi Māori.
“We all need a builder. We all need an electrician. We all need a plumber. The health system needs more nurses. We’ve got to do better as a country to upskill the next generation to deliver on our future needs,” Mr Payne says.
Te Pukenga is working to ensure iwi and hapū are involved in deciding what programmes are delivered in their area.
