Children’s commission believe essentials shouldn’t be dreams.
Children’s commissioner Dr Clair Achmad says far too many children are dreaming about having life’s essentials, especially mokopuna Māori
Yesterday, Stats New Zealand released their June 2022-2023 child poverty statistics, showing 1 in 7 tamariki Māori live in a household earning less than 50 percent of the national median income, $96,000.
Dr Achmad says mokopuna Māori are 72 percent more likely than other tamariki to experience material hardship, so addressing this needs to be top of mind.
“The key focus here must be on ensuring that mokopuna Māori are simply able to be mokopuna Māori every day. And that means being able to experience their culture, stand strong in their whakapapa and in their mana”, she says
Dr Claire Achmad says the National party committed themselves during their election campaign to half child poverty by 2028, so she will keep them accountable.
