Sovereignty challenge in Green’s maiden speech
New Green Party MP Huhana Lyndon used her maiden speech last night to remind the crown Ngā Puhi did not cede sovereignty.
Ms Lyndon, the party’s Northland candidate and a former Ngati Wai chief executive, is one of four Te Pāti Kākāriki members with roots Te Tai Tokerau alongside with Marama Davidson, Te Anau Tuiono and Darlene Tana.
“I reflect on He Whakaputanga, the declaration of sovereignty made by our tupuna to the world. Kua kore, kore rawa ngā hapū ō Ngāpuhi i tuku te mana rangatiratanga ki te karauna. E kore rawa ngā hapū ō Ngāpuhi i tuku tō tātou tino rangatiratanga ki te kāwana. Ka whawhai tonu mātou, āke āke āke,” she says
