New Green MP Darlene Tana paid tribute to the mahi of conservationists and environmentalists in her maiden speech in parliament yesterday.
Before entering parliament Ms Tana work on restoration of the taiao in and around Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf.
She says her experience living in Denmark for almost two decades showed her the need to balance economic prosperity and the environment.
“I get the need for economic growth and prosperity but my wero is simply that we do this in ways that regenerate rather than detract from the mauri, that we manaaki our hononga ki te taiao,” Ms Tana says.
Two other Green list MP’s based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Fa’anana Efeso Collins and Steve Abel, with give their maiden speeches tonight.
