Ngāpuhi gears up for action packed Waitangi
Northland iwi Ngāpuhi is meeting in Kaikohe this morning to confirm arrangements and possible kōrero topics for next week’s Treaty of Waiangi commemorations.
The hui-huinga follows both the hui-a-motu called by Kingi Tuheitia on Saturday, and yesterday’s Rātana Pa gathering.
Ngāpuhi leaders have joined the chorus of opposition among Māori to what they see as attacks by the coalition Government on Te Tiriti and kaupapa Māori policy, and they have at every opportunity reiterated that Ngāpuhi has never ceded its sovereignty to the crown.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Paul Goldsmith is expected to meet with some hapū representatives during Waitangi commemorations to gauge current attitudes towards restarting settlement talks.
