Māori protests just the start says poverty campaigner
Auckland Action Against Poverty says today’s protests could be just the start as the new Government tries to roll back gains made in the past 20 years.
Te Pāti Māori supporters around the country this morning attempted to disrupt traffic in centres around the country to highlight what they say is the coalition’s anti-Māori agenda.
AAAP spokesperson Brooke Pao Stanley says non-Māori could also mobilise against measures including multi-billion dollar tax breaks to landlords, getting tougher on beneficiaries, removing fair pay protections for working people and rolling back climate action.
“A lot of the work that they’ve outlined that they want to do – is actually just undoing mahi that’s been done. I think they prioritise big business and landlords and I think that’s really obvious that they’re not really here for peoples’ who have been oppressed or marginalised,” she says.
Brooke Pao Stanley says Christmas is already looking grim for many people, and she expects more people will rely on charity to get by in 2024.
