Auckland turns back on Labour
Labour’s new deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni says a lot of soul searching and research will go into why Auckland turned its back on the party on election night.
The Kelson MP was yesterday voted into the job by the 34-member caucus after Kelvin Davis did not put his name forward.
Chris Hipkins was reconfirmed as leader.
Labour now holds just six of the city’s 21 seats, including losing Mr Roskill, New Lynn and Tamaki Makaurau.
“Clearly Auckland was a problem for Labour at the election and so we’ve got a lot of work to do there. For our Pacific, Māori and ethnic communities, we need to think broadly about where we fell short and what we need to do next time,” Ms Sepuloni says
