Takatāpui mātauranga drives research

A researcher at Auckland University’s James Henare Research has been asked to share his work on takatāpui mātauranga and data sovereignty at a prestigious American university.
PhD scholar Nicholas Jones says the definition of takatāpui has evolved from those with an intimate relationship of the same sex to becoming an umbrella term for all Maori gender and sexually diverse whanau members.
As a guest lecturer at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, he intends to share how the experience of takatāpui is different than that of other LGBQTI+ groups in Aotearoa, and how the experience of indigenous groups is at odds with the binary view of gender that came with colonisation.
“Instead of having a narrative of the suppression that has dominated in the Western discourse it’s more of a narrative of how takatapui whanau in Indigenous communities tend to be revered in some ways. They were never excluded. They always had a particular role and a function in society,” Mr Jones says.
