Peters backs kiwi housing vision
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is singing harmony to Labour’s new waiata about housing for New Zealanders.
Labour’s plan to restrict sales of existing homes to New Zealand residents or Australians has drawn cries of racism from the governing parties.
But Mr Peters says it is in line with what New Zealand’s trading partners do, and it's a way to stop speculators taking affordable homes off the market.
"In the great days of the great Labour Party in the 1930s and 40s and the National Party in the 1950s and 60s and 70s, New Zealand housing was about housing for New Zealanders, not half the darn world, and it’s a ridiculous argument, we need to get back to some fundamentals and build houses for the New Zealand population," he says.
