COMET casts off from council
Education organisation Te Hononga Akoranga COMET is breaking its gravitational bonds to Auckland Council.
It’s transforming itself from a council controlled organisation into an independent charitable trust.
Auckland councillor Alf Filipaina says Comet has come a long way in the 24 years since it was started under Manukau mayor Sir Barry Curtis started as the City of Manukau Education Trust.
He says its mahi has lifted Pacifica and Māori educational aspirations.
“I truly believe they have. And, look, I know that council will be supporting them within the initiatives we may end up wanting to do around Maori education and improvement,” he says.
Alf Filipaina says the council will reduce its financial commitment to COMET over the next two years.
