Davis looks to mokopuna as election race tightens
Labour deputy leader Kelvin Davis whatever happens to the party on October 14, he’s looking forward to being a grandfather.
Mr Davis revealed he was expecting his first mokopuna on the weekend of the election during a live Te Tai Tokerau electorate debate on Whakaata Māori.
He intends to spend the day supporting his daughter.
A Whakaata Māori-Curia Research poll predicted Mr Davis will hold the seat with 32 percent support, with Te Pāti Māori candidate, Mariameno Kapa-Kingi on 26 percent.
Mr Davis’s support was stronger with older voters, which Te Pati Maori is capturing the younger vote.
The Greens’ Hūhana Lyndon is on 7 percent while 6 percent say they will vote for Maki Herbert of the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party.
Labour was set to get 35 percent of the party vote, followed by Te Pāti Māori on 22 percent, Greens on 9 percent, National 8 percent and ACT 4 percent.
The cost of living was the biggest issue for Te Tai Tokerau voters at 34 percent.
In the leadership stakes, Chris Hipkins was the preferred prime minister with 27 percent, while Rawiri Waititi on 12 percent beat both Christopher Luxon on 11 percent and Winston Peters on 10 percent.
