Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says ordinary Māori suffer the effects when politicians turn up the dial on race.
At an event in Kawakawa yesterday, Prime MInister Chris Hipkins called out the increase in race-baiting, and Labour MPs Kelvin Davis and Willow-Jean Prime revealed the racial abuse they were getting at candidate meetings was the worst they had experienced.
Mr Henare says while Māori politicians have a voice, for the Maori on the street it is confronting.
“When New Zealand is like this and race baiting is used, Māori clearly suffer. Our health outcomes fall and we’ve got to be clear in pinpointing why this is a bad thing and what happens when race baiting take off in our electorates as we have seen in the past few weeks,” he says.
