Whakaata Māori back in own studio

Whakaata Māori chief executive Shane Taurima says the service’s new television studio is for the entire Māori media sector.
Hawaikirangi was opened this morning in the building next to its East Tamaki headquarters, Hawaikitangata.
Mr Taurima says it will bring down the cost of making programmes like Homai te Pakipaki and Code, which have been produced at outside facilities since Maori Television moved from Newmarket.
“When Whakaata Māori was based at Newmarket, there was a range of studio based programs that were made then. And we’ve continued to make studio based programs since being here in East Tamaki, but it’s come at quite a significant costs. So now that we have a facility, we certainly intend to use it as much as we possibly can,” he says.
The new studio will be available at competitive rates to all Māori media providers, and it also includes training facilities.
