Kupu sliced and diced for kids’ cookbook

Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust, which aims to publish te reo translations of 100 books, today launched Edmonds Taku Puka Tohutao Tuatahi – the Māori version of the Edmonds’ My First Cookbook for young people.
Translator Jen Martins says it wasn’t an easy task.
“There are a lot of vocabulary in these sorts of books and there are different words for example – we’ve got chopping, we’ve got dicing, we’ve got slicing and all those things. Many of us would just reach for words like tapahi for the whole lot but in translating the book we really tried to differentiate between some of these different so we had to find all of these kupu and we had to create new terminology because some of them didn’t exist,” she says.
Dr Martins says it’s exciting to have not only a cooking guide but a tool to teach te reo Maori to tamariki and even to adults in a practical way.
