The New Zealand Nurses Organisation has issued district health boards with notices of an eight-hour nationwide strike on August 19.

The strike was approved by vote of the majority of the union's 30,000 members and it's the second of three planned strikes.

Members rejected the latest DHB offer because it failed to set out clearly how safe staffing will be addressed.
