Treaty principle talk appeal to racism

Labour Party deputy leader Kelvin Davis says the election is shaping up to be run on bread and butter economic issues and racism.
He says calls from ACT to remove references to the Treaty of Waitangi from legislation are about playing on the fears of Pakeha New Zealand to roll back progress Māori have made.
“The racism is very subtle at the moment, a quiet reference to rewriting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the ACT Party’s policy and let’s get this clear, if there is a National-ACT Government the tail will be wagging the dog when it comes to race issues,” Mr Davis says.
He says Labour hasn’t been looking for headlines in its work for Māori, but instead has developed consultative processes so it is tackling shared priorities with iwi.
