Bilingual hikoi brings pride to Clendon
Clendon residents will be out tomorrow marching to celebrate their south Auckland community.
Clendon Pride organiser Melissa Atama says the bilingal hikoi starts at 9am with the blessing of a new mural on the side of the Pak n Save supermarket, which goes on to a hauora market in the Town Centre carpark where health products and providers will be on display, then a stop at the library and recreation centre for more activities.
After that it’s a 2.3 kilometre hikoi to Manurewa Marae where there’s a sports and talent showcase from 2 until 5pm.
"Really just to awhi our community and bring us together and connect and start having these conversations and just celebrating what Clendon has to offer and putting some mana back into Clendon because it does have a story that has a history and we will be telling some of that story too along the hikoi with some wayfinding signs, local facts that link back to Maori history as well as the English history back to Thomas Reddy Clendon," Ms Atama says.
