A leading campaigner against deep sea oil drilling says ending exploration is a victory for communities, iwi and the environment.
The Prime Minister yesterday announced there would be no further offshore block offers and just three more years of land in Taranaki being made available for exploration.
Mike Smith from Greenpeace says the new Government understands fossil fuel extraction is a sunset industry.
It is also responding to pressure from the wider community, such as the survey taken by Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis which found 87 percent of his constituents opposed drilling, or the 82 East Coast hapu who banded together against exploration.
"It was something we an really be proud of coming from Aotearoa, a small country in the South Pacific, and this is another example of us showing leadership in a troubled world and providing hope and incentive for others that it is possible to move beyond the problems that are causing the crisis in the climate and to move towards solutions so it as a great signal that is being sent out," Mr Smith says
