Peters ready to plant more trees
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says his party’s policies are better for Māori and the country than anything being pup up b¥ the Māori Party of the Greens.
He says a policy like free dental care shows how out of touch they are, since the real issue is making sure children grow up with healthy teeth.
In the case of climate change, he says other parties are just talk.
“This is a party that’s planting a billion trees, the right tree in the right place, and all of a sudden we got told ‘that won’t work all by itself.’ I didn’t say it would work all by itself but it’s a whole lot more than any other party’s done. All the rest have shut me down but we were the party that went out there and said we are going to plant a billion trees, right tree, right place,” Mr Peters says.
Two polls out this week show New Zealand First getting over the 5 percent threshold to reenter parliament.
A Guardian Essentials poll put it at 5.3 percent and a Taxpayers’ Union – Curia poll registered 5.8 percent.
Both polls put Labour below 30 percent, with National and ACT winning enough seats to form a Government and Te Pati Maori on 2.5 percent.
