Court backs Pukaki protection

The Environment Court has upheld an Auckland Council decision to protect a dormant volcano on the shores of the Manukau Harbour from development.
The owners of Nga Kapua Kohuora or Crater Hill on Pukaki Peninsula were challenging the peninsula's designation as rural land.
Planning committee chair Chris Darby says the case was a test for the Auckland Unitary Plan.
He says protecting the natural and cultural landscape in the area was a priority.
The landowners wanted to build almost 600 housings on and around the maunga.
