Ngai Te Rangi sets protest schedule

A Tauranga Moana iwi leader is threatening a series of protests because of continuing dissatisfaction with its treaty settlement.
Last week Ngai Te Rangi put a boat on Tauranga Harbour stopping the pilot boat going out in what chief executive Paora Stanley describes as a soft protest.
He says there will be other actions leading up to a protest on the steps of parliament on October 4, the week before the election.
The iwi is fighting the crown’s offer of settlement redress properties in Waihi Beach and Athenree to Pare Hauraki Collective members Ngāti Taratokanui, Ngāti Tamaterā and Ngāti Hako.
“Now this issue of Hauraki is brought about by the interference of government in our tikanga and it’s forced an unnecessary battle between us and Hauraki. What we’re doing is we’re turning the focus on the government. Our Hauraki cousins, we will fight them as well but it’s not in a similar ilk as where we should be pointing our guns which is at the government itself,” Mr Stanley says.
Paora Stanley says Ngai Te Rangi is also seeking support from other iwi leaders to action against crown interference in tikanga.
