Coromandel looks to build back better as slip blocks coast road

Coromandel mayor Len Salt says this year’s extreme weather events are having a major impact on tourism, which is the life blood of the region’s economy.
Early on Monday morning State Highway 25 at Ruamahunga between Thames and Coromandel was blocked for several hours.
State Highway 25A between which connects Thames with Whangamata and the eastern side of the peninsula is still closed after part of the road near the summit collapsed during Cycle Hale, and it’s not expected to reopen until March 2024.
“The reality is our roading network is fragile and vulnerable to extreme weather and there’s no getting way from that. We’ve got a long term plan of work we are going through with Waka Kotahi and the government to rebuild those roads, so build them back better that they were before so they can survive these extreme weather events,” Mr Salt says.
