Ngāpuhi looks at trust overhaul
Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi will be holding a special general meeting on Saturday to overhaul its trust deed.
The proposed changes came out of a hard-hitting review of the runanga in the wake of the sudden resignation of Sonny Tau as chair and the controversy over his replacement.
Chair Wane Whare says they have been grouped into five work streams, including professional development for trustees; changes to the trust deed; the representation model; the role of Te Ropū Kaumātua Kuia O Te Whare Tapu O Ngāpuhi; and governance of companies in the Ngapuhi group.
Because Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi is a mandated iwi organisation under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004, all resolutions to amend the trust need must be passed by a 75 percent margin.
Mr Wharerau believes this is achievable.
“Our inten tion is to move forward and hopefully explain any awangawanga that people may have in relation to any of those resolutions,” he says.
Saturday’s hui is at Parawhenua Marae, near Ōhaewai
