Former top cop called in to clean Oranga Tamariki mess
Former Police Commissioner Mike Bush has been brought in to run Oranga Tamariki’s youth justice and care and protection residences after two staff members were stood down following allegations of sexual misconduct at two separate facilities.
Chief executive Chappie Te Kani says Mr Bush and former chief social worker Shannon Pakura will also conduct a rapid review of all residences including Oranga Tamariki community-based homes.
The allegations, which involve staff acting inappropriately towards young people, were referred to police last week.
Mr Te Kani says his priority is the safety and well-being of the young people involved.
He says it’s non-negotiable that every young person who is taken into Oranga Tamariki care and facilities will be safe at all times.
