Claim process boosts Tuwharetoa hapu
Central North Island iwi Ngati Tuwharetoa is using its treaty claim negotiations to strengthen its hapu base.
The iwi has just approved an agreement in principle and will now spend the year working towards being able to sign a deed of settlement.
The deal will include $25 million in commercial redress and cultural redress including a new Taupo Catchment Entity to oversee water and land management in the area.
Negotiation manager Gina Rangi says the tribe has 26 traditional and active hapu so the process requires a lot of consultation and wananga to maintain consensus.
