Wāhine Māori judges sworn in

Crown Māori Relations Minister Kelvin Davis is celebrating the swearing in of two wāhine Māori judges last weekend.
In Rotorua, Ngaroma Tahana was sworn in as a district court judge.
And in Whangaroa, Sheena Tepania became the first Māori to join the environment court bench.
Mr Davis says it’s recognition for the skill and expertise of the new judges, with Judge Tepania having practiced environmental law for more than 20 years.
“I think it’s great we’re looking to improve the diversity, making sure out wāhine are up there, making sure Māori are up there in these high positions, and it was a wonderful occasion, plenty of whaikōrero, beautiful kai, all those great things that make a Māori hui a special occasion,” he says.
Mr Davis says he’s looking forward to the upcoming swearing in of another Māori judge, Alana Thomas of Ngāti Rehia and Ngāti Kuri.
