Iwi land vital for city expansion
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says post-settlement iwi could have a major role to play in housing the super city’s growing population.
Mayor Brown says an about turn on a decision about residential zone plan changes is a set back, but the trend is to build up rather than out.
He says the council needs to be sensitive to community views, but it’s likely the area around transport centres, commercial hubs and ridge roads are likely to get multi-storey dwellings.
He told Radio Waatea host Dale Husband iwi have been active in the Unitary Plan process because they all have or stand to get significant land holdings.
"Whether it is for detached housing, whether it is for commercial developments, whether it is for apartments and courthouse developments, whatever, they're all in this space, all of the iwi, and in fact right where you are, Waatea, it's not just about iwi. There is a lot of interest," Mr Brown says.
He says Auckland won’t have enough affordable housing if it keeps developing the way it has done.
