Debt owed for Walker courage

Former MP Shane Jones says Ranginui Walker not only challenged Pakeha but also woke up the mauri among Maori people.
The long serving academic and Waitangi Tribunal member died on Sunday, and his tangi will be held over the next three days at Orakei Marae.
Mr Jones says he was a voice that always showed courage.
As a teacher he expected effort, and he put the same effort into his extensive writings.
"Extremely disciplined, hard working and an inquiring mind, and he had a wry smile about him – he knew when you were not quite on top of your game, and he could be very waspish in his criticism of you. Every hapu, every Maori whanau who values language, identity and their place in the political and cultural sun in Aotearoa owe that man a great debt," Mr Jones says.
