Job split for police role
Police have avoided any messy fight over the statutory deputy commissioner role by appointing the two prime candidates to the job.
The job becomes open at the end of the year when Deputy Commissioner Wally Haumaha retires.
His appointment five years ago sparked a bitter battle in senior police ranks, including leaks aimed at harming his prospects.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster has welcomed the appointment of the two new statutory deputy commissioners – former Eastern District Police Commander Tania Kura, who’s currently the deputy commissioner for leadership and capability, and Jevon McSkimming, who’s deputy commissioner strategy and service.
Deputy Commissioner Kura joined Police in 1987 and was made Eastern District Commander in July 2017, responsible for Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and the East Coast.
The Governor-General appoints the statutory deputy on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
