Bilingual artist Mohi Allen wants to keep summer going with his first waiata for 2023.
Tahuri Mai released last Friday captures the 26-year-old’s experience of raumati.
It references dancing under the rain or the sun and being with people.
He says he wanted to use kupu everyone could relate to, such as kopikopi or thrusting the hips.
“All our kaumatua and kuia, they all know that word so I thought why not use some of those kupu our whanau used on a daily basis and bring it into a modern type of waiata like Tahuru Mai,” he says.
MOHI says this year’s big project is to write more bilingual, neo-soul waiata to encourage people to learn te reo.
