Taipari hikoi
A hikoi protesting oil exploration off Northland's west coast has marched down the main street in Kaitaia.
The hikoi left Te Rerenga Wairua yesterday morning, and organiser Reuben Taipari says there was great support from Maori and Pakeha alike as the group made its way down Te Oneroa a Tohe Ninety Mile Beach.
The hikoi is due to be welecomed on Te Tii Marae at Waitangi on Thursday, but Mr Taipari says this year it's more about the journey than the destination, with the route taking in settlements like Rawene, Waima and Moerewa.
He told Radio Waatea's Paakiwaha host Willie Jackson it's part of a process of building up awareness among younger people about the need to fight for their future.
