Teachers make case for higher pay

Teachers have taken to the streets today to push their case for more resourcing, not only in their pay packets but in more staff and more support in the classroom.
The strike involves more than 30,000 teachers from kindergarten through to secondary, although schools from areas still recovering from the cyclone were given leave to opt out.
Bilingual teacher Moeahau Husband says teaching is like an octopus, where people don’t know haw complex the task is until they are in it.
“It’s a very rewarding role, helping our kids become better people. The compensation is in the growth of the tamaiti, not the monetary value that is in the pay slip at the end of the week. However with inflation and the cost of living going up and up, the current salary the teaching profession is on isn’t good enough,” he says.
Moeahau Husband says he’s seeing banners saying Pay up, and Did the mahi – still not treat, and he’s rocking a Teacher rangatiratanga flag.
