National keen for Māori to hop on its electric train

Download AudioThe National Party is hoping Māori will jump onboard its electrification train as the opposition looks to outdo the Labour Government’s renewable energies target.
In a proposal outlined by National Party Deputy Nicola Willis – they’ve set a target of 200% renewable energies, double that set by the Labour Government.
Nicola Willis says a National Government will electrify Aotearoa New Zealand by establishing on land and off-shore wind farms and solar projects.
But success of the proposal depends on Iwi participation as mana whenua, mana moana and rights holders under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Iwi already participate in renewable energy schemes including solar housing, and power generation projects.
Any attempt at establishing further investments in renewable energy projects will also depend on favorable cultural and environmental impact assessments to the satisfaction o mana whenua.
