Tirikatene backing therapeutic court push

Download AudioThe new Minister for Courts says he’s excited by the moves towards therapeutic courts now on trial around the country.
Initiatives such as the alcohol and other drug treatment court are part of Chief District Court Judge Heemi Taumaunu’s Te Ao Marama strategy, which aims to tackle the causes of offending rather than just mete out punishments.
Rino Tirikatene says judges are responsible for running the business of the courts, with the ministry making sure they have the resouces they need.
“I hope to be able to progress and really make some demonstrable impacts of that through various district courts around the country and ultimately to be rolled out, that’s where we want to be leading , solutions-focused judging, being able to support that, providing the tools the judiciary needs,” he says.
