Iwi radio stays live for storm warnings
Radio Ngāti Porou has switched to 24-hour broascasting until Cyclone Gabrielle is past.
Station manager Erana Keelan Reedy it’s at the request of Ruatoria Civil Defence, and it’s appreciated by listeners.
“It’s a really frightening time for everybody. We’ve been hearing Gabrielle ius the worst storm of the century, even though she’s been downgraded to a category 2, It’s really important for times like this that our people are hearing a constant voice,” she says.
Civil Defence and wardens are going door to door to make sure everyone is safe.
Erana Keelan-Reedy says whanau from Te Puia Springs and Waipiro Bay evacuated to Tahora Marae last night bringing paua and puha with them so they had a great breakfast this morning.
