Degree to encourage Ngapuhi arts
Northland-based polytechnic NorthTec is launching a new bachelor in Maori arts degree.
Maunga Kura Toi will offer undergraduate study in whakairo and Maori Visual Arts at its Whangarei campus, and raranga or weaving from the Kaikohe learning centre.
Tutor Kura Te Waru-Rewiri says the qualification is kaupapa Maori-based and will have a hapu-iwi focus that reflects the people of Te Taitokerau.
It will be taught by leading Maori artists and Maori art educators with Ngapuhi connections.
She says graduates will be qualified to follow a number of routes into employment, including teacher training, curatorial positions in museums and art galleries, production of artistic work for stage, theatre, television and advertising, or operating an art studio or exhibition space, as well as in the tourism industry.
