Cyclone Gabrielle set to cast long path
Batten down the hatches – the Met Service says Cyclone Gabrielle is a storm system that needs to be taken very seriously.
The cyclone, which is now a “severe category three storm”, is expected to hit Northland and Auckland on Sunday night through to Tuesday.
Met Service meteorologist David Miller says it will bring up to 300 millimetres of rain and 150 kilometre an hour winds.
“As well as the winds and the rain we are going to see the coastal impacts, the heavy swell and coastal inundation but not just the upper North Island. We will see impacts from Gabrielle especially in the eastern parts of the North Island as well right down to Wairarapa and even maybe Wellington during Monday and into Tuesday,” he says.
Gabrielle is currently over the Coral Sea well to the northeast of New Zealand.
